When They Shall Say Peace and Safety…Sudden Destruction
Jesus had just finished a discussion with His disciples about events that would occur at the end of the world. The Master spoke about there is going to be wars, earthquakes, famines, diseases, and tremendous signs in the sky.
But then in verses 12 and 13 of Luke 21, Christ’s prophetic eye saw desperate times that lie ahead for His children.
“But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.” Luke 21:12
“…they shall lay their hands on you…” Who’re they? They are the same kinds of authorities that laid hands on God’s children down through the ages from Jeremiah to John the Baptist, from Waldensians to Wycliffe, and from Luther to Zwingli.
Christians have long been persecuted, and now we learn from the lips of Jesus that there is coming a time when we will also soon suffer persecution.
It seems almost incredible that such a thing will occur today. I mean, in this climate of safety and of free speech and religious freedom in North America, it’s hard to imagine any Christian being delivered up to church authorities and into prisons.
“For when they shall say, peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes on them, as travail on a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” 1 Thessalonians 5:3
If it were not for our absolute faith in Christ and His Word, doubt would begin to creep in wondering if this is at all possible.
But let’s take a closer look at what’s going on today, shall we?
Let’s take a look at some news items:
1. Obama DHS Purchases 2,700 Light-Armored Tanks to Go With Their 1.6 Billion Bullet Stockpile
2. FEMA Camps

3. FEMA Coffins
Verses 16 and 17 says, “And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.”
This is sad, very sad. We must come to the forced realization that the Lord was right when after being told that His mother and brethren were standing outside waiting to speak to Him He said, “Who is my mother? And who are my brothers? For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Matthew 12:46-50
In other words saint, unfortuantely some of our very family members who do not embrace present truth will turn against us. These individuals whom we love dearly will turn against us and turn us into the authorities. They will readily do it because they refuse to do the will of the Father.
Verse says, “And it shall turn to you for a testimony.” The very act of turning against us shall be a testimony against them.
Christ ends His discussion in this chapter with words warning, “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” Luke 21:36
” Watch ye therefore…”means to observe the signs of the times. It means that the time is here when we need to look around us and see prophecy being fulfilled before our very eyes. There must be no more burying of heads in the sand.
We need to Pray, pray, pray, and pray some more. Then get ready! Get ready! Get ready, for your redemption draweth nigh.
